I put together a brief linkable guide to this weekend’s Brooklyn Folk Festival on No Depression. Check it out here!
Alex Battles for Mayor of New York
Good evening, New York City.
This morning I announced my candidacy for the Mayorship of New York. I believe that any New Yorker should be unashamed of wanting to be the Mayor of New York. Are you a New Yorker? Are proud of it? Announce your candidacy. It’s not that hard.
The Whisky Rebellion at the Brooklyn Folk Festival. 4/19/13
We are very, very excited and honored to be playing the opening night of the 5th Brooklyn Folk Festival. We’ll be the penultimate act of the night, following Minnesota’s Cactus Blossoms, and preceding The Brain Cloud! And that’s only half the bill! Kristen Andreassen & Critter Eldridge! Chevron Traktors! Jackson Lynch! Joey Arbata! The whole weekend is great, so look into the three day pass! Get your tickets for the show now.
Next up. Pete’s Candy Store. 4/9/13 & more
I’ll be playing solo at Pete’s Candy Store on Tuesday, April 9 at 11pm. Pete’s is a small intimate venue with delicious sandwiches and beer and cocktails. I like playing there and I’m glad to be back. I’m playing after Lily Henly who looks like a real treat. Bring all your friends who don’t gotta wake up early on Wednesday. You’ve got a couple. I know you.
Jack In A Box. My favorite show.
Jack In A Box is an original web series written and starring Michael Cyril Creighton. Creighton plays an actor with an MFA working in a box office in New York City. I haven’t seen any series with an arc this well-formed since the original Office. The entire thing could be a feature film. I don’t know why it’s not.
In a time when almost every YouTube video has an ad on it. Jack In A Box has none in its entire series. The irony that a brilliantly made show about struggling artists has far fewer views than any number of cat videos is addressed early on.
The only problem with Jack In A Box is that it’s almost impossible to try to explain it so someone at a bar, get them to remember the name, etc. Where is it? It’s about the fast food place? It’s by the Jurassic Park guy? So I’m linking to it here, in the hopes that I can just say, oh it’s on my website. Whisky, but without the e. Right. Oh sure, that’s gonna help.
Anyway, I don’t know these guys, but after 18 years of living in New York, I feel like I do. Here’s the link to Episode 1. If you’re not hooked by Episode 6, “Mother”, then probably you oughta go watch the Slingshot Channel instead.
3/29 Friday night Battles & Shaky play at Jimmy’s no. 43!
Down the steps to a basement in the East Village, through thronging crowds of hungry Friday night flesh, grab a drink at the bar and take a left, where the cat collective munches pretzels and applauds string-driven storytelling at The Sugar Mountain Showcase, musician Peter Arvo’s regular showcase of folk music.

Facebook invites. I know, right? Ubiquitous, annoying, misplaced. I get it. Well, Mr. Sheldrake, all your troubles are over. From now on, I’ll only be sending event invites to the folks in this group: Fans of Alex Battles & The Whisky Rebellion. It’ll also be a place for people to share photos, recordings etc.
